Through the contradictions, the poet shows between two seeds, there is an important lesson for our life. Even one of both seeds is plant in a good place, gets a better treatment, it does not mean it will grow and rise beautifully. In contrast, another seed which plant in a dirt and get a worse treatment can grow and rise well. This contradiction shows that even the two seeds of roses which have the same color, shape, and size do not have the same ‘future’.

It is a Paradox and Hyperbole poem. It compares two things that are very different, death and life. It tells the readers about what the poet will do if she died. In this poem, she said that she will be a ghost to discover the world’s secret, to return to her body and live, and also to choose to be in heaven. Then, she will have revenge, and she will live. In fact, we know that a person that has been died cannot do everything like a lived person. They are also some statements that are too much. Because all things that she wants to do are impossible, such as she want to discover the world’s secret and be in earth and heaven.

This poem is showing any contradiction between two acorns rose roses seeds ‘ two of the same color, shape, and size do not have the same front. That is, we have to work hard to survive in life in spite of everything we seem worse around. Because of all the good things doesn’t give us a guarantee to have a bright future in life. The contradiction is about places, treatment, how it grows and which ones can survive. Behind the contradictions that things between the two poets pointed out, there is an important lesson seeds for our lives. The seeds of the same ride would not be the same. In fact this is the plant in a good place, better treatment, does not mean it can grow and rise up pretty. In contrast, the seed plants in a dirt and get worse treatment can grow and rise up pretty.

    “WHEN I DIE’
In the poem the poet uses of paradoxes and hyperbola figurative. Comparing two very different things is death and life. The death of telling us about what poet would do if he was dead. Even we know that deceased person can perform and choose nothing. To portray those meaning, the poet support the meaning using metaphor in his poem. First, love is being compared to a burning candle (l.1). First, /when I die I will be a ghost and discover the world’s secrets/, it’s merely expresses the speaker’s desire to be a ruler of the world. Second, /when I die and become a ghost, I will return to my body and live/, it emphasizes one’s desire that she wants to live forever in the world. Third, /when I die I will be on earth and choose to be in heaven/, it’s merely expresses her authority that she can choose to be on earth or heaven. Third, /when I die and I have revenge I will live to seek it/, it expresses that she has a hatred for people who give pain to her and she will revenge to them even she has died. Finally, / when I die, I will live/ this is also Paradox. It shows a contradiction between two things that seemingly cannot be resolved. Besides, the poet also exaggerates this statement to emphasize that she wants to live forever.

In “Two Roses” Eugene Binx describes the two types of human life from birth to death. In this poem the poet speaks symbolically. That means something more than what it is. The poet uses symbol to shorten complicated ideas into an image (word). First, seeds symbolize two men were born into the world (l.1). Second, a pile of dirt and a garden bed (l. 2-3), symbolize the one born as poor man and another one as rich man. Third, the dirt has shit put on it and the bed has perfume put on it (l. 4-5), those symbolize the one has hard life and another one has prosperous life. Fourth, the dirt grow slower and the bed grows fast (l.6-7), symbolize the one has many obstacles in his life and another one has not many obstacles in his life so he enjoy his life with the easiness in it. Fifth, grows strongly and grows weakly (l.7-8), symbolize the one has hard life will be tough and persistent personal, while another one who never put an effort in his life would be spoiled person. Sixth, grows to be beautiful and grows to be ugly (l.9-10), symbolize the one with hard life will appreciate his life by doing good things, while another one waste his life by doing bad things and not useful. Finally, the dirt lives and the bed dies (l. 12-13), symbolize that at end the one who strive for his life will survive in the world, while the one who waste his life will die.

In “All roads lead to Rome” Alex Nodopaka describes the goal of having better life. For him, that there are many different routes to goal. To portray those, the poet uses allegory to represent idea as object or situation. First, Ho Chi Min is a city in Hanoi, Vietman (developing countries). It means that he has hard life and still far from successful life. Second, Egg Fu Young is an omelet dish, as represent that every day he is only adequate to eat it. Third, dolce vita is luxurious things. It express that his goal is to have successful life. Fourth, Pisa is a beautiful city in Italy (a flourishing country) far from Hanoi, it represent as prosperity, means he will never give up to reach his goal till they can reach it. Finally, Pizza is a delicious and expensive food, it represent a successful life with the luxurious in it. He believes that he will reach his goal because there are many ways to reach it as “All roads lead to Rome.” The poet uses allegory to represent an abstract idea so we let think to the resemblance of the secondary to the primary subject.

  5. Love Is

“Love Is” is one of the poem which use Metaphor figurative. The poet make implicit comparisons from love to another things. He compares love with a burning candle, sunset, and also song. There theree things that are compared with love aim to show the implicit meaning that can describe the meaning of ‘love’ according to the poet closely. Like the tittle “All roads lead to Rome” if we have a great urge and really want to get it, there will be a way to realize it.

    Two Roses
This poem is shown the contradiction between two seeds of rose. The condratiction are about a place, treatment, how it grows and which one can survive. Behind the contradiction things that the poet shows between two seeds, there is an important lesson for our life. The same seeds of rose will not be the same. Even it is plant in a good place, get better treatment, does not mean it can grow and rise beautifully. In contrast, a seed which plant in a dirt and get a worse treatment can grow and rise beautifully. What does it mean ? the poet chose paradox figurative to point out : even the two seed of roses which have the same colour, shape, and size do not have the same ‘future’. It means, we have to work hard to survive in life although everything arround us seems worse. Because all of good things does not give us a guarantee to have a bright future in life.

    When I Die

It is kind of poem that use paradox and hiperbole figuratives. It compares two things that tottaly different, death and life. It tells us about what she will do if she die. She will be a ghost, discover the world’s secret, return to her body and live, choose to be in heaven, she will have revenge, and she will live. In fact we know that a died person can do and choose nothing. It is hiperbole too because all things that she wanted to do are imposible. How come a person can discover the world’s secret and be in earth and heaven ?

  6. Dear all,
To see your understanding of “figurative languages”, please identify any such items in the poems “Love Is”, “All roads lead to Rome”, “Two Roses”, and “When I Die”. After identifying them, explain why do you think the poet uses it. To beautify the description? To support meaning? And so on. Look at the following analysis of mine as a sample. Write analysis in a paragraph for each poem. Good Luck!

    April Rain Song

In “April Rain Song” Langston Hughes describes the good qualities of rain. For him, the rain is not only an ordinary natural phenomenon. It is something gentle, sweet, and loving, and, thus deserves to be loved. To portray those qualities, he beautifully employs three personifications. First, the falling rain is being compared to a person kissing the reader (l. 1). This makes the rain seem gentle and caring. Second, the falling rain is compared to a mother figure singing a lullaby (l. 3). This makes the rain seem soothing and calming, like a mother’s lullaby is to a baby. Finally, the falling rain is compared to someone playing or even drumming a song. This is intended to remind the reader how the ‘music” produced by the rein help us to sleep, just like a person would play a soothing song to lull us to sleep. Realizing those qualities of rain, Hughes’ final statement, “And I love the rain”, becomes unquestionable!
