    School for child

    This topic is for assignment I. I choose this topic to indicate why some parents send their child to elite school and some other send their children to regular school.
    Qualitative method : What the reasons the parents choose school for their children?
    Quantitative method : for example . in a village we count or record, how many parents who send their child to elite school or regular school.

    1. sorry sir i am choose wrong topic

      a zoo

      differences of number visitors who come to the zoo in weekdays and weekend.
      we can used quantitative methode, for example we count visitors in weekdays and weekend then we can get the result from the data . I think quantitave methode more easier bacause absolute . qualitative method we can used to know why they come at weekdays or weekend , for what event they come ?

  2. A zoo
    – Ticket prices for adults and children at the zoo is different.

    To investigate this research quantitative easier to use because we can directly ask the ticket clerk at several zoos worldwide to get the truth.

    – The many different animals at the zoo more visitors to visit.

    To investigate the case of the quantitative methods should be used because it will be easier, by giving questioner to visitors.

    A hospital

    – accident patient in idul fitri month is more than regular month.

    For this case we may use a qualitative method because the researchers were able to observe directly to hospitals to ricochet conclusions.

    – Responsibility, friendliness and quality of care from the hospital is the most preferable of the patients.

    By using quantitative research method will be easier to draw conclusions, because it is very closely related to the public / patient. By providing questioner.

    A bus shelter

    – Passengers did not wait bus at bus shelter because they want to be the first passenger on the bus and get a seat.

    Quantitative methods because it is related to the community, so that we can ask them to give some reason for the question.

    – Passenger’s face more frantic in the morning than in the afternoon while waiting for a bus at the bus shelter.

    The method used in this case should be qualitative, because the researchers were able to observe directly the passenger’s face morning and evening at several bus shelters.

    An English class in kindergarten

    – The student prefer to study with pictorial writing compared with just writing.

    Quantitative because we can take some of the students in the sample and give them questions.

    – Learn and practice can increase the creativity of students.

    Qualitative because we can directly observe student progress stage by stage to draw conclusions.

  3. Dear Sir,
    Sorry I’m late.This is my response to the task of understanding research
    The site interested me to be observed is a hospital

    1. How the Waste Water Treatment Installation/ IPAL in X Hospital ?
    Method : Quantitative research . The data takes using an experiment. The hospital’s liquid waste examined and then the results were compared with parameters ( COD Parameter (Chemical Oxygen Demand), pH (keasaman), Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Total Suspended Solid ) .
    2. Analysis of health service quality in X Hospital
    Analysis of health service quality aims to determine the level of satisfaction and patient expectations so we use qualitative method. Design of the research is interview using cross sectional approach between the head of the hospital,staff and patients so we can indicate the level of appropriateness between satisfaction and patient needs.

  7. Dear Mr.Parlin
    Below is my assignment:

    1. A bus shelter, interesting research topics that could be performed:
    • The bus shelter condition in Jakarta.
    • The bus shelters function in Jakarta.
    2. An English class in a kindergarten, interesting research topics that could be performed:
    • Why kindergarten should have an English class?
    • Teacher’s problems teaching English in a kindergarten.
    3. A hospital, interesting research topics that could be performed:
    • Emergency Room service in Jakarta.
    • The new registration system in Jakarta’s Hospital.
    4. A zoo, interesting research topics that could be performed:
    • The cleanliness of Ragunan zoo in Jakarta.
    • The variety animals of Ragunan zoo in Jakarta.

    From eighth topics mentioned above, I chose ‘Emergency Room service in Jakarta’ using qualitative methods because the researcher and what is researched are interdependent and data obtained by conducting open interviews with the subject under study through the records, tape recordings / video / photo. I also chose ‘The cleanliness of Ragunan zoo in Jakarta’ using quantitative methods because the researcher and object are separated and data can be done through questionnaire surveys that are scalable and can be calculated and the results can be analyzed through statistical calculations

  8. Dear Sir,
    Below is my response to the task of Research Methodology

    Interesting research topics that could be performed at sites are:
    1. A bus shelter
    “Number of Loading areas”
    “How to manage the time of a bus to load/unload passengers?”

    2. An English class in a kindergarten
    “The perceptions of teachers on a kindergarten reading program”
    “What cognitive and motor skills are generally expected by kindergarten teachers?”

    3. A hospital
    “The quality of a hospital services”
    “Ambulance crews’ responses to emergency calls”

    4. A zoo
    “Attitude of visitors to animals”
    “How to attract and inspire visitors with the wonders of the natural world”

    From eight topics I chose to discuss about Ambulance crews’ responses to emergency calls. One way to do this would be to examine statistics giving the time which crews take to get to an emergency. However, such statistics may not tell the whole story. For instance, when does the timing of the emergency services’ response begin when the caller picks up the phone, or when the ambulance crew receives the information from the operator and isn’t it also important to examine how operators and ambulance services grade the seriousness of calls? If so, qualitative research may be needed to investigate how statistics are collected, e.g. when timing starts and what locally counts as a ‘serious’ incident. Note that this is not just an issue of the statistics being biased which quantitative researchers recognize but also an issue of the inevitable (and necessary) intrusion of common-sense judgment into practical decision-making.

  9. Hi…Mr. Parlin. I am interested in doing the research related to “An English class in a kindergarten”. In this case, I can observe how many children in the class who like learning English through music and movement as a quantitative method. I can see the number of children who excitedly join an English lesson with music and movement during the class and how many children who lack of interest in it. As a qualitative method, I observe what kinds of methods that the teachers implement to make the children interested in participating in their teaching and learning process. Each teacher has different way to lead the English class with their own methods.

  10. The sites interest me to be observed are a bus shelter. A bus shelter can tell us many social issues that are interesting to be observed and bring them into a research. There are some ideas popping up into my mind:
    1. traffic jam problems related to number of vehicles on the road;
    2. how many people still take public transportation to go to work;
    3. why DKI Jakarta government needs to renew public transportation (bus);
    4. how much money public bus passengers spend to go to work;
    5. why people still choose public bus as main transportation to work;
    6. the most “rush” hour in business areas in Jakarta;
    7. the relations between rush hour and “3 in 1”; and
    8. bus shelter: redesigned to give comfort to people?

    From eight topics I could find, I prefer to write the first one (traffic jam problems related to number of vehicles on the road) and the third one (why DKI Jakarta government needs to renew public transportation). I chose “The relation between number of vehicles on the road and traffic jam” can be researched using quantitative method because the researcher only observes the number of vehicles on the road, the time duration, and means of transportation on the road. It seems obvious that the more vehicles on the road the more traffic jam can be. But have you ever thought if there are no motorcycles on the road it can be less the traffic jam? From the data gathered, the researcher can conclude whether both things have strong relation.

    For the topic “Why DKI Jakarta government needs to renew public bus” can be researched using qualitative method because the researcher does interview to public bus passengers who can be met at the bus shelter. From the questioner data gathered, researcher can conclude the reasons why DKI Jakarta government needs to renew public bus.

  11. Hello Mr. Parlin,. I choose zoo as a topic for quantitave method. in this case, i comparing the Ragunan zoo and the Safari park zoo for their trips on holiday. I asked 10 of hundred people in jakarta about both of them. thay prefer go to the Ragunan zoo because it near from their house and the place is quite interesting with cheaper price. in fact, the Safari park zoo is more popular and more attractive, but the price of admission to the safari park is quite expensive and difficult to distant location that do not have private cars.

  12. Hi Sir,
    I think topic “What people doing at bus shelter while they are waiting for the bus ” could be studied using quantitative research, because we make a questioner and ask people to fill it. The question is like this :
    What are you doing while you are waiting for the bus? (circle the answers below:
    1. reading
    2. talking to others
    3. using HP (to send sms, facebook, twitter)
    4. just sitting or standing.
    Finally, we get the result in numerically. (We know how many people like reading, like talking, etc)

    Then, the topic ” What method of teaching English that the kindergarten student like” could be studied using qualitative research, because we can observe only one kindergarten. At last, the result surely describe in narrative. For example : The student of kindergarten A like studying English when the teacher tell a story and play video for them, it can see from ……………”

    That’s all. Thank you

  13. Hello Mr. Parlin, actually I have a quite interesting topic that concerning with hospital; I named it “Government hospital versus private hospital in Jakarta”. In here I’m talking about the people ideas related with these two kinds of hospital. Because this case is dealing with a lot of people, I think quantitative method is more appropriate for it. Let just say, if we want to know which kind of hospital that giving better service, I can make a check list paper numbered from 1-10 and spread them out to around 500 patients in both two kinds of hospital. By this way we can get the result faster and more accurate.

    1. Yes Mr, Sofrul, that’s a very good topic to study. In this case you want to compare the service quality provided by state and private hospitals? It seems you’d like to do a survey using patients as respondents? As a starting point, your idea, once again, is fabulous. Good job!

  14. In a hospital, we can use qualitative & quantitative methods. In qualitative methods for example: how many people get heart attack in a one room. In quantitative methods for example: why they get heart attack, etc.

  15. according to me,we can use qualitative method for case “at bus shelter”,, as example, we meet a lot of people there Are wearing nice clothes and look like a office-worker. In fact we don’t know what are they worRking for exactly,, then a quantitative method for case “at English class”,, we know how many children who can get the lesson faster than others.

    1. we know how many children who understand and able to mention or repeat the word correctly by giving them questions about the topic that given to them in a day or a week,,,,

  16. Dear all attendees of Research Methodology Class,

    For each of the settings listed below, mention two interesting research topics that could be performed at that site. After getting the eight topics, select one research topic that could be studied using qualitative methods and one that could be studied using quantitative methods. Explain why a qualitative or quantitative study is appropriate for that problem. The sites are:

    1. A bus shelter
    2. An English class in a kindergarten
    3. A hospital
    4. A zoo

    Good Luck!

    1. Qualitative method is more appropriate for the hospital site. Then I make my topic is The Difference between a government hospital and a private hospital. There are two areas can be discussed for this research ; salary and medical facilities .
      Salaries
      Working in a private hospital means a higher salary than working in a hospital run by the government. Aside from the comparatively low salary in a government hospital, working in it can be so stressful because there is a large number of patients in this hospital. Remember that a government hospital charges lower than private medical institutions.
      Medical facilities
      A private hospital has enough funds to buy advanced facilities. A government hospital, on the other hand, has a limited budget so it lags behind a privately owned one in terms of equipment and other facilities.
